Con Voi Hiếu Nghĩa – Chuyện Tiền Thân Đức Phật

Ngày xưa ở xứ Ba La Nại có một vị Vua thường dẫn lính vào rừng săn bắn. Một hôm nhà Vua thấy một con voi trắng tuyệt đẹp, vua bắt về sai lính trông nom cẩn thận và lo cho ăn uống sung sướng.

Nhưng kể từ khi bị bắt, voi chỉ khóc đầm đìa không chịu ăn uống. Tên lính trông nom liền trình lên nhà Vua điều ấy. Vua liền tự mình đến chuồng và hỏi voi tại sao không ăn uống mà cứ khóc mãi như thế.

Voi liền quỳ xuống thưa rằng:

– Tâu bệ hạ, tôi còn cha mẹ già ở rừng xanh không thể đi kiếm ăn được, chỉ trông cậy vào mình tôi. Nay tôi sa cơ bị bắt, cha mẹ tôi chắc sẽ chết đói. Thà tôi chịu chết còn hơn sống mà không làm tròn hiếu đạo.

Nghe xong nhà Vua động lòng thương mến thả cho voi về rừng. Voi quỳ xuống tạ ơn và hứa sẽ trở lại hầu hạ Vua sau khi nuôi dưỡng cha mẹ già đến khi qua đời. Xong voi vội vã chạy về rừng, nơi cha mẹ ở.

Mười hai năm sau, khi Vua đang ngự tại triều, bỗng thấy con voi năm trước trở lại, thân thể gầy còm. Voi quỳ xuống thưa với nhà Vua là cha mẹ voi đã qua đời. Nhớ lời hẹn xưa voi trở về hầu hạ Vua.

Nghe xong Vua khen con voi có hiếu nghĩa, biết giữ lời hứa nên sai người trông nom con voi quý đến già chết.

Con voi ấy là tiền thân của đức Phật Thích Ca.

The Story of Buddha’s Past Life

The Pious and Loyal Elephant

Long time ago in Ba La Nại country, there lived a King who usually leads his knights into the forest to hunt. One day the King saw a beautiful white elephant. He then captured it and brought it back to the kingdom, and directed his knights to watch it carefully, and make sure the elephant eat and stay happy.

From the time the elephant was captured, it did not eat or drink but cried in suffusion. One of the knights immediately presents the situation to the King. The King himself then went to the elephant’s cage and asked why it did not eat or drink but cry so much.

The elephant knelt down and replied:

– Your majesty, I still have my old parents who still live in the green forest unable to go out searching for food to eat. I am the only one that they can depend on. Unfortunately I was captured, at this moment my parents are probably dying from starvation. I rather die than live unable to fulfill my duty as a son.

After having listened to the elephant, the King was touched and set the elephant free to go back to the forest. The elephant knelt down to express his gratitude to the King and promised that after his parents died, he will come back to serve the King. Afterward the elephant ran hurriedly back to the forest where his parents live.

Twelve years later when the King was resting a the court, the elephant appeared looking very thin. The elephant knelt down and announced to the King that his parents had passed away, and now he is back to serve the King as he had promised years ago.

After listened to the elephant, the King complimented the elephant for its pious sense and for keeping his promise. The King then directed his people to the take care this precious elephant until it passed away.

The elephant was one of Buddha’s previous life.
