Lòng Hiếu của Chim Oanh Vũ

Thuở xưa ở núi Tuyết Sơn có một con chim Oanh Vũ cha mẹ đều bị mù nên thường đi kiếm trái cây thơm chín về dâng cha mẹ. Lúc bấy giờ có một ông chủ ruộng vừa mới cấy lúa và phát nguyện rằng: “Lúa tôi trồng đây xin nguyện cho chúng sanh dùng”. Chim Oanh Vũ nghe vậy liền lấy làm mừng rỡ nên thường đến ruộng đó lấy lúa về nuôi cha mẹ.

Một hôm người chủ ruộng đi thăm lúa thấy chim trùng phá hoại lúa liền dặt lưới bẩy và bắt được chim Oanh Vũ. Chim Oanh Vũ thưa rằng: “Trước đây ông có lòng tốt cho nên tôi mới dám lấy lúa của ông, tại sao ông lại bắt tôi?”. Người chủ ruộng hỏi: “Chim lấy lúa làm gì?”. Chim Oanh Vũ đáp: “Tôi còn cha mẹ mù nên lấy lúa về nuôi cha mẹ”.

Nghe xong người chủ ruộng lấy làm cảm phục và thương xót liền thả chim ra và cho phép chim Oanh Vũ từ nay về sau cứ lấy lúa mà dùng.

Chim Oanh Vũ là kiếp trước của Ðức Phật Thích Ca. Người chủ ruộng là kiếp trước của ngài Xá Lợi Phất.

Piousness of a Oanh Vu Bird

A long time ago on Tuyết Sơn mountain, there was a Oanh Vũ bird whose parents were blind. Because the parents were not able to find their food, the Oanh Vũ bird always look for fresh, ripe fruits to offer to its parents. At this time, there was a farmer who made a vow: “The fine wheats that I have just harvested are available for all living creatures to use”. Hearing these joyous words, the Oanh Vũ bird often went to the farm to bring home fresh wheat for its parent.

One day, while the farmer was checking his wheat, he saw the Oanh Vũ bird in his wheat field, the farmer set up a trap to caught the Oanh Vũ bird.

The Oanh Vũ bird pleaded: “Your kindness is the reason why I am able to come here and take your wheats. Why are you now catching me?”

The farmer asked, “What are you taking wheats for?”

The Oanh Vũ bird then replied, “My parents are blind so I bring these wheats home to them.”

After listening to the Oanh Vũ bird’s explanation, the farmer became emotionally touched and sympathetic by the Bird’s pious behavior. Upon releasing the Oanh Vũ bird, the farmer gave it permission to take as much wheat as it needed from this day forward.

In their past lives, Shakyamuni Buddha was the Oanh Vũ bird and Xá Lợi Phất Bodhisattva was the farmer.
